Tököl is an
ancient settlement of the Csepel island, 20 km to the south of
Budapest. Due to its favourable natural conditions, it was
already inhabited in the Bronze Age. Its first documentary
mention dates from 1280. As from the XV. Century, it was a royal
residence with several handicraft inhabitants. During the
Turkish rule, the settlement became totally uninhabited.
Following the expulsion of the Turkish, prince Jenő Savoyai, the
land owner of the island populated the area with the so called
“rác” and some German settlers as well. Its first known signet
with the shiled of the town on it dates from 1728. The present
day shiled of the town represents the main motif of this signet.
